Momentum in economies including the US and India has been picking up in recent months, helping stoke optimism that global growth in 2024 will modestly outpace last year’s reading, according to research for the Financial Times.

A gauge of the performance of the US economy, taking in measures of confidence, financial markets and real activity, has recovered to its highest levels since mid-2022, providing a bright spot amid a largely lacklustre global economic backdrop.

India has seen a similar pick-up, according to the latest edition of the twice-yearly Brookings-FT Tracking Index for the Global Economic Recovery, or Tiger.

Kristalina Georgieva has won a second five-year term as IMF managing director, ahead of the start of the fund’s spring meetings in Washington next week.

Georgieva, who has been in the role since the autumn of 2019, was the sole candidate for the position. However, it was only after European leaders signalled that they would endorse her last month that her candidacy was assured.

The Bulgarian economist faced controversy in 2021 over her role in a scandal relating to her time at the World Bank, with an internal inquiry accusing her of directing efforts to artificially boost China’s ranking in the lender’s influential annual Doing Business report.

Seven-year-old Nadia Nizinkiewicz is thrilled about the Polish government’s decision to remove homework from her schooling. In fact, “everybody in my class is very happy,” she tells me while colouring patterns in her notebook. “Some of our homework is very difficult.” She is excited about instead spending more time in the park “playing berek (the Polish version of tag) with my friends”.

Since taking office in December, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has launched a series of reforms, in part to dismantle the state apparatus built up by the previous government of the rightwing Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Late last year, Tusk’s government announced a 30 per cent salary increase for teachers, who have long complained about their working conditions. His education ministry is also changing the syllabus, for instance, cutting the number of hours for religious studies classes. Some Polish history and literature that had been promoted under PiS’s ultranationalist and conservative agenda will be removed from classrooms, notably works by Polish Pope John Paul II.

The other day I met a British academic who said something about artificial intelligence that made my jaw drop.

The number of students using AI tools like ChatGPT to write their papers was a much bigger problem than the public was being told, this person said.

AI cheating at their institution was now so rife that large numbers of students had been expelled for academic misconduct — to the point that some courses had lost most of a year’s intake. “I’ve heard similar figures from a few universities,” the academic told me.
