ABOUT DigitalFUTURES |

"DigitalFUTURES" is an annual academic event series consisting of conferences, workshops, exhibitions hosted by the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University. Started in 2011, the aim of DigitalFUTURES is to promote theoretical and scientific researches on computational design and robotic fabrication among academic institutions and encourage collaborations and interactions internationally. With a 9-year tradition of experimental digital workshops that taught by the leading experts and professors from some of the most distinguished institutions in the world, DigitalFUTURES workshop has been the most popular and progressive in the world. As its attention and influence grew over the years, DigitalFUTURES has founded an international PhD program of architecture at Tongji University's School of Architecture and Urban Planning, major in computational design and robotic fabrication from 2018, to recruit the best scholars from around the world. We also set up a new approach for the undergraduate students to participate in the workshops and series of courses in the DigitalFUTURES summer events this year. Meanwhile, we’ll hold the 2019 DigitalFUTURES—The 1st International Conference on Computational Design and Robotic Fabrication (CDRF 2019), providing an international platform for the advanced scientific research papers addressing the digital technology of the architectural design and construction, in which the accepted papers will be published in the Proceedings of the 2019 DigitalFUTURES.

This year, the theme for the 2019 DigitalFUTURES is ARCHITECTURAL INTELLIGENCE. The conference and workshops will explore how artificial intelligence and big data inform our designs, how robots fabricate our buildings, and how augmented reality and virtual reality help to visualize their potential. The workshop teaching team and conference speakers are from 17 internationally renowned institutions, including ETH, UCL, ICD Stuttgart, RMIT, University of Michigan, USC and Tongji, together with cutting edge practitioners, such as Zaha Hadid Architects, XKool and City Data Group, with a total of 28 experts and scholars and 20 teaching assistants.

In late April, 2019, the DigitalFUTURES recruitment information was released simultaneously on multiple platforms at home and abroad in both Chinese and English, and was widely concerned by top universities, research institutions and society at home and abroad, covering 25 countries and regions in the world. Until May 26th, the DigitalFUTURES 2019 Committee has received 654 applications from 123 universities and research institutions, of which 78 are from overseas and 45 are from home in just one month. Therefore, 199 applicants are from oversea institutions and 80 are foreigners. The educational background of the applicants covers undergraduate student, postgraduate student, PhD student, researcher, professor and professional designer.

A total of 12 groups were set up in this year's workshop. As of June 3, 2019, the enrollment of outstanding students was completed. With an acceptance rate of 29.7%, tutors and teaching assistants of the workshops have selected the excellent 194 participants according to the applicant’s CV, portfolio and volunteers, and sent them the acceptance invitation letter via email.
